SMI-ICE-Chile’s Outstanding Participation in the 360° Lithium Forum
Organized by the Center for Research in Technologies for Society (C+) of the UDD Faculty of Engineering and SMI-ICE-Chile, the event brought together authorities and experts from industry, the public sector, and academia to analyze the main production, regulatory, commercial, environmental, and social challenges facing the lithium industry.
SMI-ICE-Chile and Codelco analyze results of the climate risk model
Within the framework of the climate change resilience project that SMI-ICE-Chile is developing for Codelco, the teams from both companies met to review the climate projections obtained for high-altitude regions and the progress of the geospatial results visualization tool.

Rick Valenta, Director of the Sustainable Minerals Institute at The University of Queensland, spoke at CESCO 2024, a major exploration forum focused on mining sustainability.
Visiting our Codelco partners
To continue strengthening collaboration between The University of Queensland and one of our strategic partners, CODELCO—Chile’s National Copper Corporation, two experts from SMI-ICE-Chile’s Environmental Rehabilitation and Ecosystem Dynamics team, Felipe Saavedra Mella and Jacques Wiertz, had the worthwhile opportunity to meet with CODELCO’s El Teniente Division to discuss the environmental management challenges and opportunities it faces.
SMI-ICE-Chile team held planning workshop
The 32 members of the SMI-ICE-Chile team met in Termas de Jahuel to carry out the 2024 strategic planning. Over two days, the Centre’s seven areas discussed the main challenges facing the Sustainable Minerals Institute at The University of Queensland, based in Chile, especially in view of critical minerals’ decisive role in the global energy transition.
Doug Aitken invited to speak in Peru
Our Executive Director Doug Aitken was invited to speak at CIIT Peru Latam 2024, the International Congress of Technological Innovation, which is targeted towards the mining, energy and industry sector in Peru, as well as at Water Week Peru 2024.
